Two Hearts Becoming One

What does God say?

Mark 10:5-9

“It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law,” Jesus replied. “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’ ‘For this reason, a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’ So, they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

Genesis 2:18

The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

Genesis 2:19-20

Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. So, the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.

Genesis 2:20b-22

But for Adam no suitable helper was found. So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

Genesis 2:23-25

The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman, ‘for she was taken out of man.” That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.

Mark 10:8b-9

So, they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

The Problem

Hardness of Heart

Mark 10:5

“It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law”

Malachi 2:15b-16 NASB

Be careful then about your spirit and see that none of you deals treacherously against the wife of your youth. “For I hate divorce,” says the Lord, the God of Israel, “and him who covers his garment with violence,” says the Lord of armies. “So be careful about your spirit, that you do not deal treacherously.”

Do you see yourself as the one perfectly made to solve your spouse’s loneliness?

Does it give you joy to find and fill the holes of loneliness in your spouse’s heart?

What from your old life do you refuse to leave?

What practices in your life keep you from cleaving?

First, decide who will “be in charge” of your marriage—the husband, the wife, or Jesus Christ.
