Marvel of Repentance

Big Idea: We often think romantic vacations and wonderful date nights are what build trust. But the true trust builders are the conflicts, failures, and sinful actions followed by repentance of heart and actions. It is when we fall on our face in confession and humility that we become one with each other.

1 John 1:5-10

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

  1. Take responsibility for your attitude, actions, and the consequences.

Psalm 139:23-24

Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

  1. Bring it into the light -

Proverbs 28:13

Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.

  1. Pay the price

2 Corinthians 7:11

11 For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, but also what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what punishment!

2. Kill it -

Romans 8:12-13

So then, brothers and sisters, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— for if you are living in accord with the flesh, you are going to die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

3. Find friends who will not help you hide but rebuke and challenge you.

Proverbs 26:11

Like a dog that returns to his vomit is a fool who repeats his folly.
