The Big Idea: Work is good, and rest is good; God has established a certain rhythm between the two. But rest is absolutely essential to worship.
Genesis 1:31 – Work is Good
God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.
Genesis 2:15 – Work is Good for us
The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.
John 5:17 – Work is by Design
Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at work to this very day, and I, too, am working.”
Three Aspects of Rest
1. The initiation of rest
2. The rhythm of rest
3. The worship of rest
Is Rest…
Selfish?
A waste of time?
Worship?
Three Aspects of Worship
1. Acknowledging God’s creation
Job 37:5,7 – God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways; he does great things beyond our understanding. So that all men he has made may know his work, he stops every man from his labor.
2. Acknowledging God’s character
Psalm 19:7,8 – The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart.
3. Acknowledging God’s care
Psalm 139:4-6 – Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O Lord. You hem me in—behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.
